What Is Avsola®?

Avsola® is a prescription medicine used to treat certain chronic autoimmune diseases. It belongs to a group of medications called biologics, which are targeted therapies made from living cells rather than chemicals. As a biosimilar, Avsola is highly similar to an already approved biologic drug and adheres to the same standards for safety, strength, and effectiveness. It is administered through an IV infusion, usually at an outpatient infusion clinic like Healix.

How Avsola Works

Avsola works by blocking a protein in your immune system called tumor necrosis factor-alpha, or TNF-α. When your immune system wrongly attacks your healthy tissues, TNF-α helps drive that response and worsens symptoms like pain, swelling, and tissue damage.

Once infused into your bloodstream, Avsola travels throughout your body and attaches to TNF-α, stopping it from triggering the inflammation cycle. This action can ease your symptoms and help prevent further damage to affected areas, such as your joints, skin, or digestive tract.

What Conditions Is Avsola Used For?

Avsola treats certain autoimmune diseases where your immune system wrongly targets and damages healthy tissues. These diseases often cause inflammation, leading to ongoing pain, swelling, and organ damage. Your doctor may prescribe an Avsola infusion if you have one of the following conditions:

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis: Reduces joint inflammation and slows disease progression, especially when used with methotrexate
  • Psoriatic Arthritis: Reduces joint pain and improves skin symptoms
  • Ankylosing Spondylitis: Relieves spinal inflammation and stiffness
  • Crohn’s Disease: Treats moderate to severe cases that have not responded to other treatments
  • Ulcerative Colitis: Reduces inflammation in the colon and induces remission
  • Plaque Psoriasis: Treats moderate to severe cases in patients who are candidates for systemic therapy

Your doctor will decide if Avsola is a good fit for you by looking at the severity of your condition, how you’ve responded to past treatments, and your risk factors for severe side effects like serious infections.

What Are the Potential Avsola Side Effects?

Avsola infusion therapy reduces inflammation and relieves symptoms, but blocking TNF-α also lowers your immune system’s ability to fight infections. This makes it easier to catch illnesses and can increase the risk of certain serious health problems. Your doctor will check your medical history, run tests, and monitor you throughout treatment to watch for signs of complications.

Other common side effects of Avsola may include:

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Sinus infections
  • Stomach pain
  • Skin rash
  • Fever

Rare but serious Avsola side effects may include:

  • Serious infections like tuberculosis or pneumonia
  • Liver problems, including liver failure
  • Blood disorders such as low white or red blood cell counts
  • Heart problems, including worsening of heart failure
  • Nervous system issues like seizures or vision changes
  • Certain types of cancer, including lymphoma

You could also experience an infusion reaction during or after your treatment, which may include shortness of breath, chest pain, flushing, itching, or low blood pressure. Most reactions are mild and happen during the first few infusions, but severe reactions can occur. Nurses will observe you during each visit to respond quickly if necessary.
