When your immune system doesn’t work the way it should, you may get sick more often or take longer to recover from infections. Managing this kind of condition takes ongoing care and the right treatment plan. Your doctor may prescribe Hyqvia as part of that plan, and here’s what you need to know.

What Is Hyqvia Infusion Therapy?

Sometimes, the body has trouble making or using its own antibodies, which help protect you from infections. Hyqvia infusion therapy uses antibodies from donated human plasma to supplement your immune system and help you stay healthier.

Hyqvia is administered subcutaneously, or through a small needle under your skin, usually in the stomach area or upper thigh. You’ll receive hyaluronidase first, which helps your body absorb Hyqvia more easily and comfortably. The full infusion takes about one to two hours.

What Is Hyqvia Used For?

Hyqvia treats a group of conditions called primary immunodeficiency disorders, which affect your immune system’s ability to fight infections:

  • Common Variable Immunodeficiency: With CVI, your body doesn’t make enough antibodies, resulting in frequent sinus infections, ear infections, pneumonia, or stomach problems.
  • X-Linked Agammaglobulinemia: Patients with XLA have very low or no antibody production to combat repeated infections like ear infections, bronchitis, and pneumonia.
  • Severe Combined Immunodeficiency: SCID is a very serious condition where your T cells and B cells are not working properly, so even minor infections can become dangerous.

Hyqvia can also help manage ataxia-telangiectasia and syndromes including hyper IgM, Wiskott-Aldrich, and DiGeorge.

What Are Potential Hyqvia Side Effects?

When you receive Hyqvia, your skin could feel swollen, warm, itchy, or sore near the infusion site. These reactions are usually mild and go away within a day or two.

You may also have more general side effects like headaches, tiredness, fever, or muscle aches. These symptoms are more likely to happen after your first few treatments as your body gets used to the medicine.

In rare cases, you might feel lightheaded, short of breath, or have chest pain. Some people may develop signs of an allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face or throat, trouble breathing, or a rash. If this happens, tell your nurse or doctor right away.
